Low Histamine Diet

The low histamine diet severely limits my intake of the two types of foods that cause my balance problem: foods that contain histidine (the chemical the body produces histamine from) and foods that contain sulfur (the chemical that my body has trouble metabolizing). Foods that contain wheat or grains such as breads contain high quantities of histidine. Foods that contain sulfur are tomato and tomato based products (pasta sauce, catsup, etc.), milk and citrus fruits as well as many others.

Its also important (at least initially) when on a low histamine diet to eliminate sugar from your diet. This is because sugar causes your body to release adrenaline. If your histamine level is high two things can happen when you eat sugar. The first is that your adrenaline level may spike causing; nervous energy, worsening dizziness symptoms, and possibly even a panic attack. The second is that the sugar may cause your body to use up its already (histamine) depleted supply of adrenaline. This may cause periods of very low energy or even exhaustion within an hour or so after eating sugar. Fruit sugar (fructose), honey, Nutrisweet, Saccharin, and real maple sugar won't increase your adrenaline level, so they're OK to use instead of sugar.

My diet was created specifically for me by my nutritionist. It is very high protein and contains a substantial amount of meat and eggs, which are alleged to cause high cholesterol. It doesn't. My level is 150 which is low normal. The key is to eat high quality, low fat cuts of meat and avoid burgers. Also eating a handful of cashew nuts and a handful of walnuts every day significantly reduces cholesterol levels. The nuts must be eaten in combination, every day. High cholesterol is it actually caused by baked good like cakes, cookies and breads.
