Meniere's Disease

Although everyone agrees that Meniere's Disease was named after the French Doctor who first identified it about 140 years ago, no one knows for sure what causes it. It is generally agreed that it is caused by the failure of a mysterious fluid regulation system that controls the amount of endolymph fluid in the semicircular canals. This extra (or possibly lack of, or fluctuation of) fluid apparently has some effect on the hair cells in the semicircular canals causing a balance problem. There are many people who have Meniere's Disease. I saw a statistic somewhere that 2 out of 1000 people have it to some degree. There are support groups available if you feel that misery really does love company. (See the Links Page)
